6 November 2002Third European Directory Marketplace Conference to be held in London
Whitaker Associates, a leading consulting organization in the Directory Services marketplace, announced that it will hold its European Directory Marketplace Conference 2003 (EDM03) on February 10-12, 2003 in London, England. This conference will explore and elucidate the changes and opportunities occurring in the European directory services arena and will bring together industry leaders and participants from directory service organizations in Europe and elsewhere in the world.
EDM03 is being held in London partly because the United Kingdom is becoming one of the most competitive directory marketplaces in the world. This transition is the result of a decision made in 2001 by the UK's Office of Telecommunications (Oftel) to assign new directory inquiry (DQ) service codes and to terminate operation of the old code, 192, by BT (formerly British Telecom) and other incumbent carriers. The new DQ codes are in the format 118xxx and as part of this transition, Oftel recently assigned 302 codes to 89 separate providers.
While the United Kingdom is the centre of some of the most dramatic European activity today, reregulation of directory service is occurring elsewhere throughout Europe. This reregulation is being driven by the European Union and national regulators' interests in making the entire telecommunications sector more competitive. EDM03 will address changes in Europe, both inside and outside the UK. Prior conferences, held in Barcelona and London, attracted participants from over 50 companies and agencies representing more than 21 countries.
